It’s getting pretty warm here in Phuket and that can only mean one thing … Songkran (Thai New Year) is almost here!

What started out as a quiet ceremony, where water was poured over people with care as a blessing, has evolved over the years into what we see in Thailand today – a fun and lively water fight. It’s a welcome way to cool down during the hottest time of year. Songkran is also a time for families to come together – flights and buses will be filled with Thai people returning to their hometowns to spend the holiday with loved ones.

Here in Phuket we mostly celebrate Songkran for one day on 13 April (although in Patong Beach it can last longer) but in some parts of Thailand people celebrate for up to a week. If you happen to be visiting during the festival, be sure to put your electronics in a waterproof bag before you step outside – you WILL get wet!

We don’t want our staff to miss out on any of the fun, so Study Thai Online will be closed for one week, from 8-16 April. Classes will start again on Monday 17 April.
